About the Classes
Build skills. Capture moments.
These 2-hour private beginner classes led by instructor Kimberly Waters focus on the fundamentals of photography, including shooting in manual mode, composition, lighting, and learning to use your camera effectively. These are one-on-one classes (semi-private classes are also available from time to time when there is sufficient interest) that will provide you with a solid foundation to get started on your photography journey. *Even if you are not new to photography; if you are looking to up your game and learn to shoot in full manual mode, buff up your skills, etc., this class is for you, too!*
What’s Included
Go from snapshots to standout shots!
You will be given a beginner's photography booklet I've created, which has cheat sheets, terminology, and other useful information and guides. The class covers all of the basics of shooting in manual mode, composition, lighting, and learning to use your camera effectively. I will show you where to find the most used settings on your specific camera, how to set the ISO, aperture, shutter speed, etc. You will receive a handout with a few fun challenges to put your newly acquired skills to the test, and I will be there for guidance along the way. You can use these challenges to continue honing your skills after the class. They work great for many different locations and scenarios. At the conclusion, we will review your photos and go over any questions you may have.

Testimonials

"Loved the activities! Kimberly was very helpful helping me navigate my camera."

-Carole
"I learned a lot about my camera. I will take another class soon."

-Debra
"I have loved photography for most of my life, having not picked up my camera for about 5 years I decided to knock the dust off with this class. I found it very helpful. Kimberly was clear in her instructions and very patient with us all as we tried to figure out our cameras and how to get comfortable shooting in manual mode (again). The park was a great location and the duration felt long enough to cover needed topics. I plan to take the class again in a different location as well as a few others that you guys have planned. Again I thought Kimberly was a great teacher, wealth of knowledge, patient with all my questions and seems to truly love photography. I look forward to future classes and meet ups."

FAQ
Who is this class designed for?
Primarily designed for beginners or those seeking to learn shooting in manual mode, these are one-on-one classes (semi-private classes are also available from time to time when there is sufficient interest) that will provide you with a solid foundation to get started on your photography journey. *Even if you are not new to photography, if you are looking to up your game and learn to shoot in full manual mode, buff up your skills, etc., this class is for you, too!*
What gear should I bring?
You should bring a digital camera capable of shooting in manual mode (most modern DSLRs, mirrorless, bridge, or advanced point-and-shoot cameras). Please bring a memory card with plenty of space, at least one fully charged battery, water to drink, and a pen and paper if you would like to take notes.
While many film/analog cameras operate in manual mode, this class is designed for digital photography. Some smartphones allow you to shoot in manual mode, though there are differences, of course, and a digital camera is preferred.
Why is a digital camera best for this class versus film or smartphone?
While many film/analog cameras operate in manual mode, this class is designed for digital photography. The biggest difference is the lack of instant feedback on screen and not being able to change the ISO, as it is fixed per roll of film.
Some smartphones allow you to shoot in manual mode, though there are differences, of course, and a digital camera is preferred. If you are shopping for a camera and would like to take the class with your smartphone in manual mode, we can work with that. However, keep in mind that most smartphones have a fixed aperture, meaning you cannot manually alter the depth of field; it is simulated via software. The smaller sensors also require higher ISOs in low light, leading to more digital noise, although computational photography attempts to fix this. You do not have 100% true control over your photos taken with a smartphone.
Can I bring a friend or family member?
If you are booking a private class, it is a one-on-one class. This allows you to have complete focus and dedication from the instructor for the duration of your class. Even if someone is not actively taking the class with you, it can still be a distraction for both the instructor and the student/participant. If you would like to book a semi-private class with a friend/family member (up to 4 participants total), please reach out to me about setting that up!
